Lake District Guided tours
A wide variety of half or full-day guided tours

Mountain Biking
Explore the Lake District by bicycle with Country Lanes. Quality cycle hire, spares and repairs, day trips, short breaks and longer tours. To make a reservation please telephone 015394 44544 or visit their cycle centre at Windermere railway station. Grizedale Forest also hires bikes for their forestry trails.

Off-Road Driving
Take to the Hills - get straight behind the wheel of a specially prepared 4x4 vehicle for your own personal off-road driving experience in the Lake District. Drive rough and rocky off-road trails in breathtaking mountain surroundings with Kankku.

Go-Ape
Based in Grizedale Forest Go-Ape is a network of rope bridges, trapezes and death slides that stretches for roughly a mile through the tree canopy...this impressively extensive cat's cradle of ropes, netting and platforms, set high in the trees is an aerial assault course!

Hot Air Ballooning
With a balloon flight over this spectacular scenery you can absorb an unforgettable view of Lakeland and perhaps a little of the cultural inspiration of Britain's heritage.

Hillwalking
The Lake District is renowned for its fells, and there is an abundance of opportunity to explore. Routes abound.

Mountain Based Activities
Enjoy rock climbing, mountain walking and navigation, scrambling, winter skills and ice climbing under the instruction and private guiding of Ascent Training. Private guiding is 1:1 or 1:2 from one day. Courses are between 2 days and a week long.

Woodland cared for by the Woodland Trust, whose ongoing project of restoration will ensure that this one of Cumbria's ancient woods is saved for posterity.

Fell Foot Park and Gardens
A Victorian Park, owned by the National Trust, directly across the lake by short ferry ride. Fine picnic areas, children's playground, tea room and boat hire. A regular ferry service from Lakeside connects with the lake steamers.

Gummers How
Just over 1,000ft in height, it commands marvellous views in every direction. The view north takes in the full length of Windermere, whilst if you look south you can follow the River Leven to the sea and Morecambe Bay. Look west to Black Combe, Coniston, Wetherlam, the Langdales, Helvellyn and Fairfield at the lake head, then the Kirkstone Gap, Kentmere and east to Ingleborough and the Pennines, with the Kent Estuary and the far side of Morecambe Bay. Look down to the steamers at Lakeside and the steam trains from Haverthwaite.

South Lakes Wild Animal Park
Immerse yourself in wild animals at one of Europe's top conservation parks. See breeding group of rhinos mixing with a herd of giraffes and a troupe of baboons: wander free amongst lemurs and kangaroos: see spectacled bears, cheetahs, lions & monkeys at the world's top Sumatran tiger conservation centre. The Dock Museum in Barrow

Lakeland Miniature Village

Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated many of her famous children’s stories in this little 17th century farmhouse which she owned for 38 years, and it has been kept exactly as she left it, complete with furniture, china and a traditional cottage garden. National Trust Property

Beatrix Potter Gallery, Hawkshead
A display of original watercolours painted by Beatrix Potter for her children’s stories. Exhibit changed annually. The 17th century building was once the office of her husband William Heelis, a solicitor, and is substantially unaltered since his day. Next door to the inspiration for Tabitha Twitchet’s shop.
